January 1, 2010 - Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2010!  Whether you are sleeping in late, taking the day off, or working hard - this is a great time to make plans for the coming year.  What changes will we see?  How will you adapt to them?  How will you drive the outcome?  APPLE is still going strong, ready to help you answer those questions.  We've got some changes for the new year, and some events coming up very soon at the Center:

APPLE's 2010 Public Events

In 2009, we had the Sustainability Series at the Unitarian Chapel in Grass Valley.  In 2008 and 2007, we had a successful Town Hall Meeting series at the same location.

Now in 2010, we are downsizing and reshaping our public events:

For the months when the APPLE Center is opening a new exhibit (every other month, starting now in January), we plan to have a speaker at the Center during the exhibit opening.

On the alternating months (starting in February), we will be showing a film at the Center based on the exhibit theme; we hope to have a potluck again at least once or twice during the year.

While the APPLE Center is not as large as the Unitarian Chapel, we're looking forward to the exciting opportunities for conversation and networking that will come from being at our new home!

Big Energy News

Nevada City - plans for a 1MW solar farm project at the old Nevada City airport site are progressing.  Last week at City Council, initial assessment by Chevron was announced, and local solar installers were there to make a very promising pitch to keep the work local.  Stay tuned for more details in the near future!

California - recent renewables laws, including SB32 (Feed-In Tariff boost), AB920 (requiring utilities to buy excess generation from businesses and homeowners), and more press for last year's AB811 (allowing efficiency and renewables investments to be paid back as part of property tax), have given a real boost of 'Energy' to local interests.  Ideas are being worked on right now to capitalize on all of these incentives and funding mechanisms locally - with the overall goal of reducing our energy dependence!

(For the MUCH bigger list of incentives, go to the Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy)

National - The US Department of Energy and the Housing and Urban Development administration have announced plans to reproduce California's AB811 on a national scale, under the title 'PACE - Property-Assessed Clean Energy'.  See the video here and take a look at the plan's website at www.pacenow.org.

International - News in the last few weeks has been dominated by the whistleblowers at the International Energy Agency - claiming that future oil reserves have been purposely overstated, and supply crunch concerns have been purposely downplayed for a long time, specifically due to pressure from the United States.  See the UK Guardian article that started it all here.

November 3, 2009 - Health and Peak Oil Wrap-up / APPLE Center Events / Slow Food / EcoKids

Two practitioners of herbal medicine, one schooled in the Western tradition and one in the Eastern tradition practiced over many millennia in China, will talk about the similarities and differences between these two forms of ancient wisdom and what they offer us today. A Sacramento homeopathist will tell us how to use homeopathic remedies for minor ailments.

  • Western Herbs: From the Kitchen to the Medicine Chest — Kathi Keville, nationally-known herbalist and author of 11 books, Director of the American Herb Association

  • Utilizing Chinese Herbs to Enhance Your Health and Well Being – Carrie Ann Smith, Licensed Acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese Herbal Medicine

October 22, 2009 - Great Renewables News / Sustainability Series / APPLE Center Events

Breaking News: CA Utilities Will Buy Your Excess Renewable Electricity; Feed-in Tariff Gets a Boost!

SB32, AB920, and more - details on recently adopted Renewables legislation and how we can make the most of it!

The Renewables news, especially in California, has been fast and furious in the past few weeks.  From DSIRE (Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency):

The California feed-in tariff was amended by legislation on October 11, 2009 [SB32]. The new law takes effect January 1, 2010, but the amendments will not be incorporated into the actual program until the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) develops regulations to implement the program changes.

The California feed-in tariff allows eligible customer-generators to enter into 10-, 15- or 20-year standard contracts with their utilities to sell the electricity produced by small renewable energy systems -- up to 3 megawatts (MW) -- at time-differentiated market-based prices. >> Read More

Also, AB920 was passed, requiring utilites to pay for excess generation, starting no later than January 1, 2011.  Click Here to read a more detailed summary of SB32 and AB920.

First things first: keep in mind that improving your efficiency and reducing your consumption first, and going with renewables second, is the only way to maximize your benefit!

In the coming weeks and months, APPLE will be working with local renewable energy providers, local governments, and citizens like you to help Nevada County and its residents capitalize on this landmark development.  Are you curious?  Would you like to get involved?  Email or call us today!

350.org Photo Shoot - This Weekend in Grass Valley

Sunday October 25 at High Noon

Unitarian Chapel, 246 S. Church St., Grass Valley

'350' is the parts per million that scientists have agreed is the safe limit of carbon dioxide that Earth's atmosphere can safely accommodate. The current level is approximately 385 parts per million.

This weekend, millions of people are participating in events all around the world. Documentation of activities and numbers of people involved will be sent to the 350 organization, led by Bill McKibben and many other international leaders, who will use it to put pressure on policy makers. World leaders will be shown just how wide spread is the public support for limiting of human generated green house gases.

The Unitarian Community is asking as many people as possible to support this effort by joining in the photo shoot.

You are also encouraged to bring signs, banners, and other visual representations of the number "350".  Spread the word!  If you have any questions don't hesitate to email or call me at 575-1268.

Your Web Site Feedback

We received a couple of good items on our website feedback form (available to anyone at the bottom of www.apple-nc.org).  Thanks, and keep them coming:

- Videos of the Sustainability Series and other talks online

We have not been filming the Sustainability Series events.  We would love to get a volunteer to help film them - then we can definitely post them online.  Good idea!  Until then, there is a video on youtube of last year's introductory presentation at the Kiss Your Gas Goodbye event.  Enjoy - and let us know if you can help film in the future!

- Facebook page for APPLE

The APPLE Center actually does have a Facebook page that is very active.  For now, we will go with that one which is already taking off, instead of adding another for the whole organization.  Click Here, or go to Facebook and search for 'APPLE Center'.

October 6, 2009 - Creating Your Own Health Everyday / APPLE Center Volunteer Training / Much More!

Hello APPLErs, and welcome to the first full month of operation for the new APPLE Center for Sustainable Living!  A lot has been happening at the Center already, and more opportunities are coming up as we speak.  Read on:

APPLE / UUCM Sustainability Series - Maintaining Your Health in an Energy-Uncertain Future - Part 2

This Wednesday, October 7, 2009 - 7:00pm
Unitarian Chapel - 246 S. Church St., Grass Valley
Part 2: Creating Your Own Health Everyday

Suggested donation $3 - $5

Join us for Part 2 of a 3-part presentation on how to create and maintain vibrant health. Tonight, learn how you can safeguard your health by creating a daily lifestyle that is mentally and emotionally balanced.

You may wonder why APPLE is focusing on health care issues. Here's the short version: A new health care paradigm that integrates ancient wisdom and modern allopathic medicine hasbeen slowly emerging, and it can sink deeper roots now — a time when the need to take responsibility for our health is ever more important. Global economic uncertainty and depletion of oil and other resources may eventually affect all aspects of the current health care system. So, the more we know about our physical, mental, and emotional health, the more options we'll have to take care of ourselves and our families in the event of changes in our current access to medical care.

In tonight's program, we'll focus on how our daily habits, thoughts, and feelings influence our health for better and for worse. This idea is now widely accepted in many medical, philosophical, and religious systems. Two local health experts, one a practicing physician and the other a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine, will share and compare their views.

Late Breaking News from US Department of Energy:

President Obama Declares October National Energy Awareness Month

October 6, 2009

A more prosperous future for our Nation's economy means making investments in energy efficiency and clean energy today. Well-funded energy research and development will not only help protect our environment and support our communities, but it will also address concerns of global competitiveness and national security. Innovation in energy technology will decrease our oil use, strengthen our economy, and reduce the dangerous pollution that causes climate change.

As American scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs bring new and improved energy technologies to homes and businesses in this country and around the world, they will be showing American leadership and vision while also making clean energy the profitable kind of energy. During National Energy Awareness Month, we recognize the contributions of individuals, organizations, and companies that are committed to advancing energy innovation and efficiency, and we promote the importance of a clean energy economy to our Nation

Maintaining Your Health in an Energy-Uncertain Future
Part 2 of a 3-Part Series:  Creating Your Own Health Everyday

Wednesday, October 7 2009 - 7pm
Unitarian Chapel - 246 S. Church St., Grass Valley
Suggested donation: $3 - $5

Join us for Part 2 of a 3-part presentation on how to create and maintain vibrant health. Tonight, learn how you can safeguard your health by creating a daily lifestyle that is mentally and emotionally balanced.

You may wonder why APPLE is focusing on health care issues. Here's the short version: A new health care paradigm that integrates ancient wisdom and modern allopathic medicine has been slowly emerging, and it can sink deeper roots now — a time when the need to take responsibility for our health is ever more important.

How Your Daily Routine Determines Your Health – Holly Leeds, M.D., Family Practice and General Surgery
How We Create Our Health Daily through Our Perceptions, Thoughts, and Feelings — Marc Halpern, D.C., C.A.S., Founder and Director of California College of Ayurveda

And, take a look at this related upcoming health care event:
Please join us for a FREE Clinic Day for all pregnant women and their partners and new families with babies. Laurie Chamberlin, CD, ICCE, Marion Gilbert, PT and Dr. Heather Hunt share their combined wisdom and years of experience on the importance of emotional, physical and spiritual health of pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
