Have you ever heard of Peak Oil?

Have you ever wanted to know more about it, why it's important right now in 2008, and how it might affect you?

Are you concerned that we may start to feel its effects and possibly dramatic lifestyle changes within the next few years?

The newsfeeds (scrolling above, with more on the News Feeds page) and Links on this web page, and more news and links from global organizations like Post Carbon Institute, the Relocalization Network, EnergyBulletin, and dozens of others will help keep you informed about the global energy scene. But how will Peak Oil affect you, here in Nevada County, California? How will it affect your group of friends, or your classroom, or your nonprofit organization, or your family?

That's where APPLE wants to help even more. We'll sit down with you beforehand, listen to your concerns, and tailor a presentation to your group's needs, level of curiosity, available time, concerns, and questions. Afterwards, we'll leave plenty of time for conversation and Q&A.

APPLE does not currently have any paid staff, professional researchers, or erengy analysts by trade. We are an army of newshounds - currently 14 board members, 25 'Core' members, 650 email subscribers, and growing all the time - and most importantly we are your neighbors. We are all in this together as a community! We all need to be educated on what the near future may hold for all of our lifestyles. Here is our pledge to you: If we don't have an answer for your question on the spot, we will find it and get back to you. If we can't find it, we will help you search. If the answer is debatable, we will say so, and why.

A recent national news headline claims that only 3% of Americans are familiar with the term "Peak Oil". Knowledge is Power, and Time is Short. Let's make it 100% in Nevada County!

Post Carbon Cities arrives on APPLE's doorstep

Are we entering a new phase? Peak Oil has been our topic of choice for the last few years - and several recent scientific opinions indicate we may have already passed the global production peak and may now be on the early edge of the heavy effects - yes, now, in 2008. Will we be seeing more and heavier effects in the rest of this year?

Whether or not we are currently feeling the peak, APPLE is currently gearing up its plans to help relay the message to a more focused audience, including local government: We just recieved a fresh new copy, hot off the press, of Post Carbon Institute's new guidebook titled "Post Carbon Cities: Planning for Energy and Climate Uncertainty".

Here are some new web features that we think you'll like: scrolling headlines at the top of the home page, and an entire new page full of news feeds from Peak Oil and Renewable Energy news sources (click the Orange in the top left, or select News Feeds from the Info menu).

Both of these update themselves frequently, and you can see the article summary just by holding your mouse over the headline. Not getting this functionality? Stop Junk Mail, Save the World!

If you want to support APPLE while you stop your junk mail and don't have a lot of time, you can check out 41 Pounds today!

An average of 41 pounds of junk mail is sent to every adult citizen each year. Approximately 44% of this mail goes into a landfill unopened.

For $41 ($18 of which you can have donated to APPLE) they will contact over 30 direct marketing organizations and catalog companies and instruct them to remove your name from their distribution lists. This includes almost all credit card applications, coupon mailers, sweepstakes entries, magazine offers, insurance promotions, as well as any catalogs you specify. Their service lasts five years. They have been able to stop between 80% - 95% of this type of mail. You can sign up online or by phone - when you do, just be sure to select APPLE as your designated non-profit group from their list.
